Airport Protest, Newquay 15/12/07

Activists from Rising Tide are protesting at Newquay's St Mawgan Airport to call for an immediate halt to the expansion of the airport and for a public debate on the plans.Rising Tide is a global network of local groups taking action against climate change and building a movement based on environmental justice and social equity.Five protesters scaled the roof of the airport and unfurled banners calling for the debate to take place. Around a dozen Police officers from the area were in attendance and monitored the protest which looked like going on for most of the day. The sergeant in charge Sgt Andy Buckley was unable to indicate precisely what the police would be doing next but it is understood that dialogue was taking place with those on the roof. There was no damage caused as far as could be seen and the protest was peaceful with a further dozen supporters on the ground chanting and beating drums.A public meeting is planned at St Mawgan Village Hall on 12.1.08 about the issue - and kernow@rising tide.org.uk will be hoping for a large turnout.
