Helland Church Celebrates With Songs Of Praise

Helland Church Celebrates With Songs Of Praise

Helland Church Songs of Praise "Come and Sing", Sunday 5th July 2015. Contact churchwarden and organiser Jenny Trethewey on 01208 75691.

And they Came and Sang! When a Songs of Praise was suggested at a recent meeting the church members did not envisage the response it would bring. For a start, there were so many hymn requests that they had to extend the list to 11. But interspersed with readings, poems and prayers, the singers had a chance to rest their vocal chords. Together with their local Benefice Choir, they were really pleased to welcome the music group from St Mabyn Church, and the guitar accompaniment to some of the hymns gave the organist an opportunity to rest his fingers. The readings were very appropriate Psalm 150, Thomas Hardy, Jack Ingrey, James Stevens Diary of a Cornish Farmer and a humorous lament on behalf of the altos in choral singing. In addition people were coaxed to give their reasons for their particular choices. Margaret Mutton gave the prayers which were so well suited to the occasion. The service began with 'Praise my Soul' and finished with 'The Day Thou Gavest'. What happened in between was sometimes unexpected, but as Canon Sherry had asked Jenny Trethewey to lead the service as she was officially on holiday, it was a risk she had to take! Jenny said, "A thank you to the music groups and their Benefice Choir, to Martin Dymond for playing the organ (and catching a frog which hopped onto his feet half way through!), to those who read and to the refreshment team. Last of all, thanks to the many people from Helland and other parishes who ensured that the service was a true Songs of Praise."...
