St Breward came all a-buzz with their Village Market Day. The village hall in St Breward was a positive hive of activity with a happy buzz of social conversation as neighbours and friends met up to sample all the crafts and goods offered by the various local groups and traders to promote their activities and raise funds. The Hall Committee had organised this Village Market, and kept a steady supply of refreshments available which raised a much needed £234 to help replenish the reserves which had been used to install the solar panels which should help reduce electricity charges for all Hall users. The many organisations and societies in the Parish included the Brownies and Guides, raising money to complete their new toilet block, the History Group which needs storage for the Archives, the Handbell Ringers who would like additional bells, the Toddler Playgroup Group who would like to keep charges down for the users and the Parish Church which always needs money! Local residents Lee Brattle (jewellery) and Norma Harbinson (photographs) took stalls to sell the products of their hobbies and far away resident (from Egloshayle!) Lorraine of Killibury Farm was selling not only her own delicious honey but also the charming wood items made by her son at the woodturning workshop at Delank. Bev Allison was publicising the Community Bus and seeking yet more drivers to enable trips out of the village as well as facilitate the school run, and lots of little children wearing charming painted faces, added to the fun and colour of the morning. The recently formed Diamond Jubilee Committee were taking orders for specially commissioned commemorative mugs and selling bright teatowels with images of well known landmarks in and around the village, raising £254 from their stall all in aid of a huge planned village Street Party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June. There are so many activities in the village that many residents belong to at least two, if not more, and so there were WI members (who made a marvellous £120 from their Puddings and Pies) and Garden Club members and Church attenders helping on most of the stalls and Jane Hanscomb was representing both the Bellydancers and the First Responders! The true highlight, however, came at the very beginning when Grace Masters, the village's oldest resident and one of the four, along with William Hawken, William Jennings and Thomas Parsons, who back in 1963 put up the monies to purchase the building 'for the benefit of the village', unveiled a brass plaque commemorating this. This is a legacy indeed! Look out for it when you next attend an event in the Hall....
