Camelford Christmas Lights Switch On

Camelford Christmas Lights Switch On

Camelford Christmas lights switch-on and fireworks, Saturday 4th December 2010.

With the rain holding off, there were crowds of people attending the annual Christmas lights switch-on for the town. Starting with the lantern procession from Clease Hall to Enfield Park led by Camelford Town Band, children were given light wands to wave as they walked through the town. At the entrance to Enfield Park from the bandstand, local MP Dan Rogerson officially switched on the town's Xmas lights followed by carol singing around the Christmas tree, again led by Camelford Town Band. Then with a bang, the fireworks began with many people watching the spectacular display from Churchfield carpark for the best view, as the rockets, mortars and roman candles lit up the night sky over the centre of the town for one of the best displays yet. With the shops remaining open for late night shopping, Father Christmas - a nicely rotund Santa - wandering the streets to the delight of the children, and a fascinating exhibition "Christmas Round The World" put on by the community in the Methodist Church raising funds for ShelterBox, there was a wonderful festive atmosphere for all ages. St Breward Camelford District Guides Carol Service

St Breward Camelford District Guides Carol Service

St Breward Church was venue for the annual Camelford District Guides, Brownies and Rainbows Carol Service, Sunday 28th November 2010.

Local Girlguiding Units, including Rainbows from Treknow and Camelford, Brownies from Camelford and St Breward, and Guides from Camelford and St Breward, recently met at the Camelford District Carol Service hosted this year by the St Breward Unit at St Breward Church on Sunday 28th November, with the service led by Rev Canon Sherry Bryan. Each Unit brought something to the service based on the Traditions of Christmas, performing sketches and songs to the delight of the congregation. Then, with a church full to the brim of proud parents and young people, began the presentations of shields and qualifications. Included in the presentations was a special award for Jill Jeffs who, as Camelford District's retiring District Commissioner and in her third appointment in this role after serving over thirteen years in total, was presented with Trelawney vouchers in recognition of her hard work and commitment to the District and Girlguiding. Jill also received at the service end a Guard of Honour at the church entrance from the recently formed local Ranger Unit. The carol service was a very fitting end to what has been the most wonderful Centenary year. Contact Camelford district commissioner Jill Jeffs on 01840 212497....

Camelford Sir James Smith´s School Awards Evening

Camelford Sir James Smith´s School Awards Evening

Camelford Sir James Smith's Community School Awards and Celebration Evening, Thursday 25th November 2010.

A number of highly successful 'firsts' were achieved at the 'Awards and Celebration' event held recently for former – and current - students of Sir James Smith's Community School. The event celebrated the achievements of those Year 11 students who left the school this July, after completing their GCSE's. Pupils, though, from years 7-11 who are still on the roll, were also recommended by teachers for prizes. Traditionally, the awards have been presented in the afternoon during the school day, however it was decided that, this year, in order to give the ceremony an even higher status, it should be held in the evening. The decision resulted in a well-attended, happy occasion which also included the 'firsts' of having prizes for separate subjects and extra trophies presented that the students could take home with them and keep. The main trophies, which are returned on an annual basis, will be put on display in a cabinet in the school, this a new idea as well. New glass, engraved trophies were produced by members of the design technology department, especially Ali Stefanotti. Among the many attending the evening were the Mayor of Camelford Robert Rotchell, Chair of the school’s Board of Governors Jonathan Holt, and the headteacher Jon Lawrence....

Camelford Davidstow Windfarm Proposal Exhibition

Camelford Davidstow Windfarm Proposal Exhibition

Camelford, Community Windpower Ltd, whose planning application for a windfarm with 20 turbines was declined by Cornwall Council earlier this year, held a public exhibition, Wednesday 24th November 2010, in Clease Hall about their new revised and proposed planning application for a windfarm with 16 turbines at Davidstow Woods on the edge of Bodmin Moor - the turbines will be visible from far afield including neighbouring parish St Breward. The proposals continue to meet with strong opposition from STINC (Stop Turbines In North Cornwall) members who made themselves available to the public at the exhibition to offer the alternative view. The revised planning application includes community benefits of a Community Fund of £125,000 per annum, a Community Turbine whereby profits in region of £30,000 would be directed back to the local community, and a Davidstow Country Park Environmental Plan would be implemented. The revised planning application will be submitted to Cornwall Council very soon. Do you have a view? Would you like more information?
