Restormel Borough Council held the 2nd Annual Restormel Sports Awards to honour the outstanding contributions made by Restormel’s Sportsmen, Sportswomen, Coaches and Volunteers. The awards evening was held at Newquay Sports Centre on 12th March 2008.Over 300 people attended the event, which honoured Restormel’s Sportsmen and Sportswomen in 11 separate categories.The night was spectacularly open by Ed Byrne, last year's Restormel Sports Coach of the Year. Ed smashed the Guiness World record for concrete braking, by braking 55 slabs 4.86 seconds beating the previous record of 17 seconds.All short-listed nominees where invited to attend and received a memento along with the people who nominated them. The awards where presented by representatives from the Cornwall Sports Partnership, School Sports Partnership, Restormel Leisure Facilities and Restormel Councillors.The winners of the categories were: Male Coach of the Year – Dave Behennah of Mount Charles Primary School St Austell for his contribution to School Sport. Female Coach of the Year and Community Volunteer of the Year – Sue Butler of Newquay Surf Lifeaving Club for her contribution to surflifesaving. Adult Club of the Year – Charlestown Rowing Club. Junior Club of the Year – Byrne Black Belt Academy. Community Volunteer of the Year – Wendy Taylor for her services to Newquay Surf Lifesaving Club. Community Volunteer of the Year (Under 25’s)- Andrea Semmonds for her services to netball. Junior School Sports Club of the Year – St Mewan Primary School Netball Team. Secondary School Sports Club of the Year – Castledore-Poltair rowing club. Sportsman of the Year – Jonathan Fox for his achievements in swimming. Sportswoman of the Year – Holly Donelly for her achievements in surfing. Services to Sport – Ron Fullwood and Chris Jepson for their dedication and commitment to the Newquay Cormorants swimming Club.
Trevithick Day is an annual day of celebration for the town of Camborne in Cornwall, United Kingdom, that took place on 26th April 2008.

Following the major road works to by-pass the Goss Moor (A30) in Cornwall, several hundred people turned out for the official opening of the footpath which now runs through the Goss Moor.
