THIS was the big one! The one which the crowds had been waiting for in anticipation! The event which would prove once and for all who the brussell sprout eating King of Newquay was going to be. But in the end it was to be decided in the penultimate round by championship contender Matt 'Mook' Ball losing his lead of several sprouts to fellow sprout eater Joe Stramik when he had to grab the nearby emergency bucket and return most of the sprouts he had eaten. Joe and Mook had entered the much-heralded contest in order to raise money for Surfers Against Sewage and The Rural Community Link Project both of which benefited to the tune of several hundred pounds. They came to the arena - the front of Newquay Fore Street's Cafe Irey, to the strains of ROCKY, Joe dressed in multicolour tights, green top and cowboy hat, and Mook in a giant sprout costume. The competition took place over ten rounds of two minutes each with a one minute break in between each. The 'Mook Puke' was the factor which decided the contest though, as referee Newquay Town Crier David Bradshaw announced the result. Although Mook had eaten a mighty 146 sprouts over ten two minute rounds, six more than his rival Joe, the puke had to be taken into account and the contest was declared a draw. The pair were presenetd with the trophy and vowed to return for a repeat bout in the future as the kitchen staff from Cafe Irey showered the couple with sprouts from the first floor window.
